Mésandans is located at 327 m , nine kilometers north of Baume-les-Dames and about 34 kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, in a basin in the headwaters of the Crenu at the western foot of the Bois des Brosses plateau.
The area of the municipal area of 5.66 km² covers a section of the undulating landscape between the Doubs and Ognon. The western part of the area is occupied by the valley basin of the Crenu (tributary of the Ognon), which lies at an average of 320 m and in which various spring streams unite. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. To the east, an approximately 100 m high step leads over to an arid, karstified high plateau, which lies at about 430 m and is mainly covered by forest ( Bois des Brosses and Bois du Valbertuy ). At 467 m, the highest point of Mésandans is reached on a hill in the Bois des Brosses. The southern boundary runs in the area of the height of Mont du Ciel (up to 440 m).
Neighboring municipalities of Mésandans are Romain in the north, Fontenelle-Montby and Viéthorey in the east, Vergranne and Rillans in the south and Trouvans and Huanne-Montmartin in the west.
history
The foundations of Roman watchtowers indicate a very early settlement in the municipality of Mésandans. In the Middle Ages, both the lords of Neuchâtel (Baume-les-Dames) and those of Montmartin owned land on what is now the commune. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Mésandans is part of the community association Deux Vallées Vertes .
Attractions
The village chapel was built in the 15th century and has a remarkable statue of Trinité from the time it was built. In the center there are numerous houses in the characteristic Franche-Comté style from the 16th to 19th centuries. Mésandans also has a large lavoir (wash house).

With 222 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Mésandans is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (298 people were counted in 1891), slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Mésandans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including a meat processing company. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main road D50 that leads from Baume-les-Dames to Villersexel . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around six kilometers away. Another road connection is with Clerval .
