Vuillafans is a French municipality with 757 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Vuillafans is located 352 m above sea level, seven kilometers southeast of Ornans and about 24 kilometers southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the Loue valley , which is cut deep into the surrounding plateaus.
The area of the municipal area of 6.14 km² covers a section of the western French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Loue valley. The river flows here in a gently winding course through a flat flood plain a maximum of one kilometer wide from southeast to northwest. The erosion valley is cut around 300 m deep into the surrounding high plateaus. The steep valley slopes of the Loue and its short tributaries are crowned at the upper edge by striking rock faces and protrusions of a resistant limestone layer. The municipal boundary mostly runs on the edge of the plateaus above this ledge. In the southwest the community area extends to the edge of the height of Champ Roy , at which the highest point of Vuilla fans is reached at 721 m. The eastern boundary is on the edge of the Échevannes plateau. With a narrow tip, the communal soil extends north into the erosion valley of the Ruisseau de Vaux .
Neighboring communities of Vuillafans are Montgesoye and Lavans-Vuillafans in the north, Échevannes in the east, Lods and Longeville in the south and Châteauvieux-les-Fossés in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages there were two important castles on the ledges above the village, which were often involved in disputes with one another. On the left bank of the Loue valley stands the Châteauvieux , which was built in the 11th century by the lords of Montgesoye and made the new center of their rule. The Châteauneuf was built in the 12th century east of the Loue and belonged to a sideline of the lords of Montgesoye-Durnes. In the shadow of these two castles, Vuillafans, first mentioned in a document in the 12th century, developed into a market town on the salt route from Besançon to Pontarlier. During the Thirty Years War , the Châteauneuf was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1639. Together with Franche-Comté , Vuillafans came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Businesses that were dependent on water power, such as mills, nail smiths and tanneries, set up shop along the Loue. Today Vuillafans is a member of the Loue-Lison community of 24 towns .
Attractions
The three-nave church was built in the 15th and 16th centuries in Gothic styles. It has a rich interior, including wall paintings and statues from the 16th century, a main altar, pulpit and choir stalls from the 18th century. In the center there are numerous town houses and farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 16th to 18th centuries. One of the oldest houses is the former manor house La Forteresse from the 14th century. A three-arched stone bridge, which was built in the 17th century, leads over the Loue. The old flour mill with its water wheel is also worth seeing. Ruins have been preserved from Châteauneuf, which was abandoned in the 17th century.

With 757 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Vuillafans is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1881 there were still 1323 people), population growth has been recorded again in recent years.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time, Vuillafans was a village characterized by agriculture and small businesses. The water power of the Loue was used early on for the operation of mills and nail forges. Today there are some small and medium-sized businesses, especially in the iron and copper processing industries, as well as various craft businesses and retail companies. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D67 departmental road from Ornans to Pontarlier . Other road connections exist with Lavans-Vuillafans and Longeville.
The Vuillafans station on the L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois-Lods railway line has been closed along with the line.
Personalities
