geography

Châtillon-le-Duc lies at 443  m , about eight kilometers north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in a promising location on the western roof of the Grande Côte ridge, south of the broad valley of the Ognon .

The area of the 6.26 km² municipal area includes a section south of the Ognon. The central part of the area is taken up by the ridge of Châtillon. This rises gradually towards the east to the crest of the Grande Côte , with the highest point of Châtillon-le-Duc being reached at 482 m on the eastern municipal boundary. To the south, the municipality reaches over the valley basin of Tallenay to another foothill of the Grand Côte, which marks the southern border. The ridge of Châtillon drops steeply to the north, and the municipal area extends with a narrow strip into the wide floodplain and up to the course of the Ognon river.

In addition to the old town center near the castle, Châtillon-le-Duc also includes various new and commercial estates along the main roads, including Les Rancenières ( 350  m ) in the Tallenay basin. Neighboring municipalities of Châtillon-le-Duc are Bussières , Chevroz and Devecey in the north, Bonnay and Tallenay in the east, Besançon and École-Valentin in the south and Miserey-Salines , Les Auxons and Geneuille in the west.

history

The municipality of Châtillon was settled very early. A Roman guard was located on the protrusion of the later medieval castle. Châtillon was first mentioned in a document as early as 967 under the name Villa de Catolio . Over time, the spelling changed via Chastoillon (1255), Castellione (1300), Châtillon-les-Besançon (1333) and Chastillon-le-Duc (1516) to the current name.

In 1198 Otto I , later Count Palatine of Burgundy, had the medieval castle Châtillon built on a promontory north of the village, which developed into the center of an important rule. When King Louis XI marched in. in the Franche-Comté the castle was destroyed in 1479. Together with Franche-Comté , Châtillon-le-Duc finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the end of the 17th century, Châtillon has belonged to the Maistre family from Salins . The fortress was rebuilt in the Second Empire . The troops stationed here fought with the German troops during the Franco-German War on October 22nd and 23rd, 1870, thus preventing their invasion of Besançon. The fortress also played an important strategic role in securing the bridges over the Ognon during the Second World War .

Attractions

The Saint-Lazare church was built in 1786 in the shape of a Greek cross on the site of a late medieval church. The current building of Fort Châtillon-le-Duc was built between 1872 and 1873. The Archbishop of Besançon had a statue of the Blessed Virgin erected on the terrace in 1872 to commemorate the fighting, which was restored in 1994.

After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 230 and 290 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then the number of inhabitants has increased more than sixfold.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the 20th century, Châtillon-le-Duc was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Since the 1970s, a commercial and industrial zone has developed in the south of the municipal area and along the main road, which, with its approximately 70 hectares, also extends to the municipal areas of École-Valentin and Miserey-Salines. Numerous companies in the watchmaking and precision mechanics, machine tool construction, textile, wood and metal processing, electronics, IT, civil engineering, cleaning and water treatment sectors have settled here. There are also various retail businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic, although it is away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the main road N 57 , which runs from Besançon to Vesoul . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 4 km away. Further road connections exist with Devecey and Tallenay.
