The Route nationale 57 , or N 57 or RN 57 for short , is a French national road that runs through the Grand Est and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regions and goes back to the Route impériale 76. From 1824 to 1973 it ran from Metz to Besançon. In 1887 the route via Xertigny was abandoned and instead led via Remiremont. The route via Xertigny included today's roads D434, D3 and D63:

During the occupation of France in World War II, it was part of Reichsstraße 269 from Metz to the departmental border at Arry. In 1973 it was extended to the Swiss border by adding parts of the N67, N461 and N462 to it:

In 2006, the section from Metz to Nancy was downgraded because of the parallel A31 . In the course of time, the N57 was expanded to a bypassing expressway on many sections, and the route through the towns was downgraded in each case. The original road between Luxeuil-les-Bains and Baudoncourt was interrupted by a military airfield. Today it leads east past this one.

N57a

The N57 ^A was a side branch of the N57 from 1933 to 1973, which branched off from it within Remiremont and led to the N66. It is now a communal street. The number was later used again until 1991 for a connection between the N57 and N83 in Besançon.
