The N488 was a French national road from 1933 to 1973 that ran in two parts between Chevagnes and Digoin. Their total length was 35 kilometers. In 1978 the route became part of the new N79. This was downgraded in 2006. Current use for the N488 is as an eastern approach road from Saint-Étienne, branching off from the N88, thus a branch of this national road.
