The Route nationale 49 , or N 49 or RN 49 for short , is a French national road that was laid down in 1824 between Jenlain and the Belgian border near Beaumont. It goes back to the route impériale 52. The length was 45.5 kilometers. In 1843 another road was marked as the N49. This connects today's Belgian national road 40 across French territory at Givet. This tour also goes back to the route impériale 52. The length increased by 7 kilometers. In 1973 the N49 was extended to Lille and a new route to the Belgian border at Jeumont. In addition, the section between the Belgian border was downgraded by Givet. For this purpose, the N45 to Raismes, from there via the N353 B , N353 A and N353 to Seclin and then on via the N25 to Lille in N49:

  • N 25 Lille - Seclin
  • N 353 Seclin - Nouveau Jeu
  • N 353 A Nouveau Jeu - Hanson
  • N 353 B Hanson - Raismes
  • N 45 Raismes - Valenciennes
  • interrupted by N 45
  • N 49 Jenlain - Maubeuge
  • N 359 Maubeuge - Belgian border

This new route was gradually expanded into an expressway. In 1982 it was shortened again to Valenciennes , as the expressway between Valenciennes and Orchies was integrated into the A23. In 2006 the N49 was completely downgraded.

N 49a

The Route nationale 49 A , or N 49 A or RN 49 A for short , was a side branch of the N49 within Maubeuge from 1933 to 1973, which connected it to the west of the city center with the N2. Today it bears the number D902.

N 2049

The route nationale 2049 , or N 2049 for short, or RN 2049 , emerged from the old route of the N49 in 1990 when it was moved to a parallel expressway. It was downgraded to D2649 in 2006.
