Painting by Thomas Lefèbvre

Thomas Lefèbvre (* 1636 in Brussels ; † 1720 ) was a painter and court architect from Baden.

Life

Thomas Lefèbvre was initially “peintre en miniature” at the court of Margrave Wilhelm in Baden-Baden . From November 29, 1669 he stayed at the court of Baden-Durlach , where he was valet and court painter. Margrave Friedrich Magnus made it possible for him to study in Venice from 1674 before he became court architect in 1688, replacing Georg Andreas Böckler . Despite this position, he was unable to implement his proposals in 1689 when planning the rebuilding of Durlach and Karlsburg . Lefèbvre envisioned a new type of model or test city, which, however, was decidedly rejected by the residents, among others. Instead, Domenico Egidio Rossi created the plans for the reconstruction after the great fire. Lefèbvre's two-year fortress imprisonment in Philippsburg ended in 1698; afterwards Lefèbvre was allowed to supervise the construction of the Durlach Castle and thus control the plans of his former competitor Rossi. In 1704 he became a building officer, after 1709 senior building officer. In 1714 Johann Heinrich Schwartz († 1727) was his successor as margrave builder.
