The Route nationale 5 , or N 5 or RN 5 for short , is a French national road that was established in 1824. It ran from Notre Dame in Paris via the "Porte de Charenton" exit of the boulevard périphérique in Paris through the former Swiss Dappental to the Swiss border north of Geneva and was 506.5 kilometers long. It goes back to the route impériale 6.

In 1829 the N 5 was passed between Sens and Avrolles via Cerisiers. Their old route became part of the N 5 BIS and the length was reduced by 13 kilometers. In 1845 there was a change between Fain-lès-Montbard and Dijon. The N 5 was led south to Vitteaux and from there took over the N 70; the route up to the confluence of the N 71 was stepped and is now the D 19 and part of the D 6 and the N 71 was extended to Dijon. This led to a route extension of 7 kilometers. In 1860, with the integration of the Savoie, the section from the Swiss border northeast of Geneva along Lake Geneva to the Swiss border at Saint-Gingolph, where from 1937 to 1970 the numbered main road 37 to Saint-Maurice and from 1970 to the Swiss Hauptstrasse 21 passes over the Grosser St. Bernhard Pass to Strada Statale 27 to Aosta. This new section was 49.5 kilometers long. In 1949 it exchanged its route with the N 5 BIS between Melun and the junction south of Montereau-Fault-Yonne . This made the national road 554 kilometers long. As a result of the reform of 1972, the section from Paris to Sens was added to the N 6, Sens to Le Petit-Villiers was added to the N 60, and from Le Petit-Villiers to Dijon it was degraded to a department road. In 2006 the road was further graded, so that today only the section from Poligny to Les Rousses exists as a national road. The N5 was linked through Geneva from 1937 to 1970 by the numbered main roads 47 and 37.
