The Route nationale 396 , or N 396 or RN 396 for short , is a former French national road . Their total length was 301.5 kilometers.

The road was first established in 1933 and at the same time added to the national road network.

The route ran from Vitry-le-François to Bourg-en-Bresse .

In 1973 the national road was downgraded except for the section between Simard and the N78 north of Louhans. This went to the new management of the N78 in 1978. It was rededicated in different department streets .

From 1982 to 2006 there was another N396, as a side branch of the N96 between Pont-de-l'Etoile and the N8 near Gémenos.

The N396 A was a French national road and at the same time a 1.5 kilometer long branch of the national road N396.

The road branched off in Longvic and continued to its end at the Dijon-Bourgogne military airfield .

The road layout had its origin from the national road N468 , which originally ran at the airport and was closed to traffic.

This national road was established in 1957 and added to the national road network.

In 1973 the street was downgraded to Département street .

Since then, the route has been signposted with the road number D996 A.
