The Route nationale 420 , or N 420 or RN 420 for short , was a French national road .

history

The road connected Épinal and Schirmeck from 1933 to 1973 and consisted of three parts, as it ran a short distance on national  roads 59 and  59 Bis .

In 1973 it took over the route of the stepped national road 392 from Schirmeck to Entzheim , as well as the short section of the N 59 Bis on which it ran, which was declassified in the same year. This section was expanded as a new expressway in the early 1990s and is now marked as Départementsstraße 1420 .

In 2006, the downgrade took place in full. The road crossed the Col de Saales , a pass of the Vosges 554 meters above sea level, and the Col du Haut-Jacques to the west of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges at 606 meters above sea level. The first-mentioned pass is meant when the road signs “Saint-Dié par Col” south of Strasbourg (e.g. coming from Germany on national road 353 ). The Saales - Schirmeck section was marked as Reichsstraße 359 during the occupation of France in World War II .
