The Route nationale 59 , or N 59 or RN 59 for short , is a French national road .

Current course of the road

The current national road has led from Lunéville to Sélestat since 1824 , goes back to route 78 and was 96 kilometers long until 2006.

2006, the mountain pass over the 772 meters above sea level lying "Col de Sainte-Marie" downgraded, because the parallel through toll Maurice-Lemaire tunnel leading national road 159 extends. This reduced its length to 75 kilometers. Between Saint-Dié and Lunéville , the N 59 has been developed as a dual carriageway and bypasses the towns, as does between Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines and Châtenois . The old route between Raon-l'Etape and Saint-Die through the towns was downgraded to département streets with many changing numbers and occasional communal streets.

Side branches

N 59a

The Route nationale 59 A , or N 59 A or RN 59 A for short , was awarded in 1976 for the road through the Maurice Lemaire tunnel . It was a (chargeable) alternative to the N59 leading over the pass "Col de Sainte-Marie". In 1978 it was rededicated as the national road 159 and since the graduation of the pass road connects the two parts of the N 59 with each other.

N 59bis

N159

The N159, which has existed since 1978, is a side branch of the N59. It leads in the Vosges through the Maurice Lemaire tunnel and represents the alternative to the pass road over the Col de Sainte-Marie.
