The N191 was set in three parts in 1824 between Corbeil-Essonnes and Mareil-sur-Mauldre. In Mareil-sur-Mauldre it had no connection to any other national road. In 1933 it was extended to Epône on the N190 (from 1949 N13). In 1949 the N10 was given a new route via Ablis. As a result, the section between Rambouillet and Ablis went to this. In 1992 the section between Epône and Les Essarts-lo-Roi was downgraded and in 2006 the rest except for the connection from the N10 in Ablis to the A10.
