The N179 was a French national road established between Honfleur and Gacé in 1824. It goes back to the route impériale 199. Their length was 79.5 kilometers. It was downgraded in 1973. In 1979 a newly built expressway, which immediately connected the N6 with the N79 Mâcon to the northeast, was given the number N179. In 1987 this expressway was extended to branch off near the N79 and at the same time renumbered to A40. As a result, the N179 shrank to the section between junction 3 of the A40 and N79. In 2006 it was downgraded to D1179.
