history

During the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) Vimoutiers was one of the places where the rebellious peasants gathered, who were called La Chapelle-Gauthier Gauthiers after their first meeting place . The uprising came to a bloody end in 1588. The insurgents in Vimoutiers themselves were not killed, but returned to their work after handing over their weapons.

During the Second World War , Vimoutiers was almost completely destroyed in the course of Operation Overlord on June 14, 1944 by an Allied bombardment, over two hundred people lost their lives. On August 22, 1944, the place was liberated by the invasion of Canadian troops. The reconstruction was largely completed by 1952.
