Échauffour is a French municipality with 742 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Orne in the region of Normandy ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Mortagne-au-Perche and the canton of Rai .

In the village is the Dolmen de la Pierre Levée.

Attractions

The castle from around 1000 was replaced by a fortified building in the 15th century, which was expanded in the 18th century.

Personalities

In 1763 the Marquis de Sade was exiled to the Château d'Échauffourt, which belonged to his father-in-law Claude-René de Montreuil, for four months. After separating from the Marquis, his wife Renée-Pélagie de Montreuil lived here for most of the year; she died in 1810.
