Metin Hakverdi (born June 25, 1969 in Hamburg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He was a member of the Hamburg Parliament from 2008 to 2013 and has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013 .

Life and work

Hakverdi grew up in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg . His father, who came from Turkey , was a taxi driver, his mother comes from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and worked as a secretary. In 1988 he graduated from high school in Kirchdorf / Wilhelmsburg . Prior to that, he obtained a high school diploma in 1986 after spending a year in Simi Valley . He studied at the University of Kiel and the Indiana University Bloomington Law and graduated in 1999 with the second state exam from. In 2000 he was admitted as a lawyer and then founded a law firm .

Hakverdi joined the SPD in 2002 . In the 2008 mayor elections , he won a direct mandate in the constituency of Billstedt-Wilhelmsburg-Finkenwerder and became a member of the Hamburg citizenry . On the constituency list, he ran in third place behind Philipp-Sebastian Kühn and Hildegard Jürgens , but was able to achieve most of the candidates' votes. In the 19th electoral term he was a member of the Budget Committee and the Legal Committee.

In the 2011 mayor election , Hakverdi was again able to win a direct mandate in the constituency of Billstedt-Wilhelmsburg-Finkenwerder. On the constituency list he ran again in third place behind Philipp-Sebastian Kühn and Susanne Kilgast , but was able to achieve the second-most votes of the candidates after Philipp-Sebastian Kühn. In the 20th electoral term he was a member of the Budget Committee, the Public Companies Committee and the Elbphilharmonie Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry .

In December 2012, Hakverdi was nominated to succeed Hans-Ulrich Klose as a direct candidate in the Hamburg-Bergedorf - Harburg constituency . He prevailed against the Harburg district chairmen Frank Richter and Ingo Egloff . In the 2013 Bundestag election he won the direct mandate with 40.4 percent of the first votes and entered the German Bundestag . With this result, Hakverdi received the best result of all Hamburg direct candidates.

In the 18th electoral term, Hakverdi was a member of the Legal Committee , the Finance Committee and the Parliamentary Financial Market Committee. He was also a substitute member of the Budget Committee , the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union and in the Cum / Ex - Investigative Committee . He was deputy group spokesman for law and consumer protection and rapporteur for his group on the topics of parliamentary bribery , women's quota and civil rights . He was also a member of the German- American parliamentary group , the German- Israeli parliamentary group and the German- Southeast European parliamentary group ( Albania , Kosovo , Serbia , Montenegro and Macedonia ).

After Hakverdi was confirmed as a direct candidate in the Hamburg-Bergedorf - Harburg constituency in November 2016 , he defended his direct mandate in the 2017 federal election with 34.8 percent of the first votes. As in the 2013 federal election, Hakverdi received the best result of all Hamburg direct candidates.

In the 19th electoral term, Hakverdi was initially a member of the Committee on European Union Affairs and the Finance Committee as well as a deputy member of the Budget Committee . Since June 2020 he has been a member of the Committee on European Union Affairs and the subcommittee on European Union issues as well as a deputy member of the Finance Committee and the Budget Committee. He is deputy parliamentary group spokesman for European Union affairs and chairman of the USA / North America discussion group of the SPD parliamentary group.

Involvement in bogus affair

Hakverdi was involved in the bogus affair surrounding Bülent Çiftlik , who was sentenced to two and a half years in prison without parole. On April 22, 2010, the news magazine Der Spiegel reported that an email was discovered during the investigation into Çiftlik alleging that Hakverdi had advised a woman on the legal consequences of a marriage of convenience. Olaf Scholz and Michael Neumann then called on Hakverdi to ensure transparency and criticized the fact that he only informed the party and parliamentary leaders after the Spiegel report was published. Hakverdi testified that he had received the woman but then passed it on to a specialist lawyer specializing in family law. This specialist lawyer for family law was his colleague at the time and, according to the bill, the consultation took place in the presence of Hakverdi. On April 29, 2010, an investigation was initiated against Hakverdi on suspicion of aiding and abetting the Residence Act. The top of the group announced on May 2, 2010 that Hakverdi would suspend his mandate until the case was resolved. On May 5, 2010, the public prosecutor announced that the case against Hakverdi would be discontinued after a monetary condition was paid.

voluntary work

Hakverdi is a helper of the Technical Relief Organization in the THW local association Hamburg-Harburg and completed basic training in October 2016. He is also a member of the non-partisan European Union Germany, which advocates a federal Europe and the European unification process.
