politics

Egloff has been a member of the SPD since 1975. From 1989 to 1994 he was chairman of the SPD district Bramfeld-Nord and from 1991 to 2001 a district representative in Wandsbek. There he was parliamentary group leader of the SPD from 1994 to 2001 . From 2002 to March 2007 he was deputy state chairman of the SPD, then until 2009 state chairman. Egloff resigned after the defeat of the SPD in Hamburg in the 2009 federal elections; the SPD in Hamburg had lost three of the six previously held parliamentary constituencies, and Egloff himself failed to run for the Bundestag. In the controversy over the candidacies of Dorothee Stapelfeldt and Mathias Petersen in February 2007, he acted as an internal mediator.

From October 10, 2001 to March 11, 2011, he was a member of the Hamburg Parliament and was active on the Environment Committee, Economic Committee and Science Committee. He was a specialist spokesman for economic policy , but gave up this post after his election as SPD state chairman in March 2007. From 2001 he was deputy parliamentary group leader, but had to give up this post in March 2004 after a dispute with Werner Dobritz until he was able to take it again in February 2006.

In the state elections in February 2008 , he moved back to the constituency of Bramfeld-Farmsen-Berne as a member of the state parliament, but then only sat on the science committee.

For the 2009 Bundestag election on February 14th of that year, the representatives of the Hamburg SPD elected him to third place on the state list. He received 207 of the 271 votes cast. He was also set up as a direct candidate in his constituency of Wandsbek . In the constituency, however, he was defeated by Jürgen Klimke from the CDU and did not enter the Bundestag via the state list, but succeeded Olaf Scholz on March 11, 2011 when he gave up his Bundestag mandate out of consideration for his election as First Mayor of Hamburg. As a result of his double candidacy , Egloff will not hand over the mandate he won in the 2011 mayor election to Lars Pochnicht . For the Bundestag election he applied unsuccessfully for the candidacy in one of the constituencies, Wandsbek received Aydan Özoguz, so that he only ran for second place on the state list. But since the five Hamburg SPD mandates were covered exclusively by direct mandates, Egloff lost his seat in the Bundestag. He is currently the first to succeed.

In the wake of the publication of cables from US embassies by WikiLeaks , Egloff was named as a critic of Sigmar Gabriel's Afghanistan policy.
