Camembert is a French municipality with 187 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Orne in the region of Normandy . It is located near Vimoutiers in the Arrondissement of Mortagne-au-Perche . The name is medieval and means something like field (camp) des Mambert.

The Norman village is known for the camembert soft cheese of the same name , which is said to have been invented by the farmer Marie Harel in 1791 .
