The N161 was a French national road established between Angers and Nuaillé in 1824. It goes back to the route impériale 181. Their length was 49 kilometers. In 1973 it became part of the new management of the N160. The route of the N161 has been graded since 2006. From 1980 the Carcassonne bypass was opened. The western part between the D118 (ex N118) and N113 became a national road with the number N161. This was downgraded to D6161 in 2006.
