The N163 was established in 1824 as the French national road between Rennes and Saint-Jean-de-Linières. It goes back to route 183 impériale. Their length was 118.5 kilometers. In 1973 it was completely phased out. Between Rennes and Corps-Nuds, the stepped road was expanded into an expressway, as this part of the expressway between Rennes and Angers decided in the 1980s.
