The N209 was a French national road, which was laid down in 1891 on the western bank of the Var, partly on the slope, between the N7 in Cros-de-Cagnes and the N205 (from 1920 N202) north of Saint-Martin-sur-Var. Their length was 29.5 kilometers. It was created for strategic reasons (military & floods of the Var). In 1973 it was completely downgraded to the D2209. In 1978 a new N209 was formed between Gannat and Varennes-sur-Allier:

  • N 9 A Gannat-Vichy
  • N 106 Vichy – Saint-Germain-des-Fossés
  • N 493 Saint-Germain-des-Fossés-Varennes-sur-Allier

This made it a side branch of the N9. In 2007 there was a graduation between Gannat and Creuzier-le-Neuf.
