The Route nationale 51 , or N 51 or RN 51 for short , is a French national road .

It was established between Orléans and Mézières in 1824. In 1826 it was extended beyond Mézières to the Belgian border at Givet . It goes back to the routes impériale 3 (border-Reims) and 44 (Reims-Orléans). Between Fontainebleau and Montereau-Fault-Yonne it was interrupted by the N5 and N5bis. Their total length was 396 kilometers. In 1973 it was shortened to the section Épernay - Belgian border. The section from Charleville-Mézières to Tremblois-lès-Rocroi was taken over by the N43, thus dividing the N51 in two. In addition, the N152 took over the section between Orléans and Fontainebleau in 1973. 2006 the graduation of the part Épernay - Charleville-Mézières, as well as Rocroi - Belgian border at Givet. Since then, the N51 has been led from Rocroi directly north to the Belgian border via the route of the N385.
