Road sign on the N89

The Route nationale 89 , or N 89 or RN 89 for short , is a French national road that was established in 1824 between the N6 in the west of Lyon and the N10 near Bordeaux. It goes back to the Route impériale 107. First it led over the ferry from Saint-Pardon, it was re-routed after the opening of the bridge over Dordogne in 1824 in Libourne. Another route change took place in 1842 between Clermont-Ferrand and Rochefort-Montagne. It was taken from today's D941, D942 and D216 down to the route over the Col de la Ventouse. From then on, its length was 537 kilometers. In 1973 it was re-routed in the eastern part of the N496 and thus divided into two parts:

  • N 496 L'Arbresle-Montrond-les-Bains
  • via N82
  • N 89 Feurs – Bordeaux

Since 2006, the N89 has only existed in short sections, as the A89 motorway was laid out in parallel.

N 1089

The Route nationale 1089 , or N 1089 or RN 1089 for short , was a branch of the N89. It was created in 1980 as a connection between the N89 and the A72 (since 2006 A89) near Chantelause. It was downgraded to D2189 in 2006.

N 2089

The number N2089 was used for two sections of the N89 when it was moved to bypass roads . From 1991, the first section between junctions 14 and 16 via Périgueux was renumbered, as the N89 was led over the current route of the A89; 1993 from Arveyres to Libourne, in connection with the east bypass of Libourne. In 2003 part of the first section was integrated into the N221, which is still a national road today.
