The Route nationale 79 , N 79 or RN 79 for short , is a French national road that was established in 1824 between the N 78 near Nevers and Montréal-la-Cluse . It goes back to route 97 impériale. Their length was 241 kilometers. In 1973 the sections between Decize and Digoin and between Bourg-en-Bresse and Montréal-la-Cluse were graduated. In 1978, a new route between Moulins and Bourg-en-Bresse was composed of different national roads:

  • N 73 Moulins - Chevagnes
  • N 488 Chevagnes - Dompierre-sur-Besbre
  • N 480 Dompierre-sur-Besbre - Diou
  • N 488 Diou - Digoin
  • N 79 Digoin - junction with N 75
  • N 75 junction with N 79 - Bourg-en-Bresse

In addition, the N81 took over the section between the N 78 at Nevers and Decize. In 1999, west of Dompierre-sur-Besbre, the route was relocated to a new construction route, where it took over the N 1079 and the N 145 to Montmarault. In 2006 it was graduated between Mâcon and Bourg-en-Bresse. It is part of the central section and southeast branch of the Center-Europe-Atlantique route .
