The N494 was a French national road from 1933 to 1973, which ran in three parts between the N77 to the southeast of Pouilly-en-Auxois and the N490 east of Lapalisse . Their total length was 132.5 kilometers. In 1978 the section between Meilly-sur-Rouvres and Autun became part of the new routing of the N81. This section has also been graduated since 2006.
