Hannes Baumann (born August 9, 1982 in Bad Saarow ) is a German sailor in the 49er and laser classes .

Life

Hannes Baumann learned to sail at the Optimisten in his hometown club, the Berlin-Grünau yacht club, on the Müggelsee in Berlin, after having tried out swimming, basketball and badminton. Since he was considered talented, he was soon able to train in the so-called Opti Müggelteam. That was the union of the best optimist sailors in the area. The 2012 Olympic sixth, Robert Stanjek (Starboot) also came from this team.

Baumann studies shipbuilding at the University of Kiel and is now starting for the North German Regatta Club .

Even as a junior athlete, he was successful in the laser class. In 2002 he won the bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Copenhagen . Baumann also initially competed in the laser class for senior citizens. In 2000 he was German champion in the Laser Radial class in Wismar, and in 2004 in the Laser Standard at Wörthsee . The first and only international championship for men in the class were the European Championships in Cartagena , where he was 65th. In 2006 he switched to the 49er class and initially sailed together with two-time Olympian Marcus Baur . At the European Championships in Weymouth in the same year they finished 15th. In 2007 they won the Kiel Week in their boat class, were 22nd at the World Championships in Cascais and tenth at the European Championships in Marsala . In the world rankings, they reached third place. 2008 brought at the world championships in Melbourne again a 22nd place, the European championships in Palma 28th place. They won the Dutch championship and were third at the Travemünde week . In the qualifying races for the 2008 Summer Olympics, Baur / Baumann were second only to the later bronze medalists Hannes and Jan-Peter Peckolt . But since only one boat per nation could start, Baur / Baumann did not qualify.

After the failed qualification in 2008, Baumann formed a team with Tobias Schadewaldt . The duo has been contesting international races since 2009. They finished 27th at the World Championships on Lake Garda and 29th at the European Championships in Zadar . 2010 they made their breakthrough. They won the races at the Kiel Week and the Travemünde Week, finished seventh in the Pre Olympics and for the first time reached the top position in the German rankings. At the World Championships in Freeport they could not defend their good results as 36th and were also 16th at the European Championships in Sopot . They came ninth in a World Cup race in Mallorca. More remarkable than the result was an accident with the boat. When it capsized, Schadewaldt got stuck under water and was saved by Baumann with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. In 2011 they won the Kiel Week and the Travemünde Week again and were once again first in the German rankings. They also achieved good results at the international championships: they were 13th at the European Championships in Helsinki and 12th at the World Championships in Perth . This qualified them for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . Before the games, Schadewaldt / Baumann won the Kieler Woche again, finished third at the World Cup in Mallorca and in the overall World Cup and world rankings. At the World Championships in Zadar, they just missed the top ten as eleventh. They also achieved 11th place at the 2012 Olympic Games.
