The Route nationale 438 , or N 438 or RN 438 for short , was a French national road .

The road ran from Lure to Mathay from 1933 to 1973 . In 1973 it was downgraded to Departementsstrasse 438. Between Lure and Héricourt , today's Departementsstrasse 438 is being expanded as an expressway . This should then take up the new guidance of the national road 19 . In 1994 the designation N 438 appeared for a connecting road to the 28 motorway south of Alençon . It represented a side branch of the national road 138. Since 2006, the connecting road has been referred to as Department Road 338 bis .
