The road was first established in 1933 and at the same time added to the national road network.

The route ran from Blâmont to a junction with the national road N392 on the 718 meters above sea level "Col du Donon". The total length of this route was 40.5 kilometers.

In 1973 the national road was downgraded on the entire route. It was in the department Road  rezoned D993.
