The Route nationale 53 , shortly N 53 or RN 53 , was a French national road .
This street number was derived from route impériale 70 in 1824. Until 1973, the route ran for a total of 47.5 kilometers in north-south direction from Metz to the border crossing with Luxembourg .
In 1973 the section from Metz to Thionville was downgraded . At the same time, the section from Florange to Thionville from the N 412 was taken over by Route nationale 412 .
In 2006 the final downgrade to various department roads along the entire route took place.
In Luxembourg, the national road continues as the N 3 .
In addition, the road had a branch stretching from Thionville to the German border. It was designated as the national road N 53 BIS .
