The Route nationale 56 , or N 56 or RN 56 for short , is a former French national road .

The street number was first added to the national road network in 1824.

Until the road was downgraded in 2006, it ran between an intersection with the N3 national road east of Saint-Avold and Sarralbe .

The total length of the former route was 25.5 kilometers.

During the German occupation of France in World War II , the national road was part of Reichsstraße 353 .
