Current course of the road

Today the national road is designated as the access road to junction no. 3 of the Autobahn 3 in Bondy , as well as between the Francilienne and the motorway junction with the national road 330 and the Autobahn 140 near Meaux in the Seine-et-Marne department . In the Aisne department , the road is numbered D 1003, in the Marne department with the number D 3, in the Meuse and Moselle departments with the numbers D 603 and D 903, and in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department with the number D 903 expelled.

Historic course of the road

The historic national road emerged from Route impériale 4 in 1824. Until 1973 it ran from the Porte de Pantin exit of the Boulevard périphérique in Paris to the border to Germany at the Goldenen Bremm near Saarbrücken , where it merged into the Bundesstraße 41 .

In Claye-Souilly a bypass road was built on which the N 3 was placed. The road through the village was signposted as national road 371 A (today Départementsstraße 422 ).

In 1973, the section between Épernay and Châlons-en-Champagne was downgraded and the section between Verdun and Gravelotte was relocated via Étain to the routes of national roads  18 and  390 . These were given the number D 603 when they were downgraded in 2006, in which, with the exception of a short stretch near Paris, the almost complete course of the remaining N 3 was downgraded to departmental roads.

Sections from which the new tour from 1973 was put together:

  • N 3 Paris - Épernay
  • Section Épernay - Châlons-en-Champagne graduated
  • N 3 Châlons-en-Champagne - Verdun
  • N 18 Verdun - Etain
  • N 390 Etain - Gravelotte
  • N 3 Gravelotte - German border

Side branches

N 3 A

The Route nationale 3 A , or N 3 A or RN 3 A for short , is a 14-kilometer branch of the N 3 that was established in 1957 and goes back to a section of Départementstrasse 22 (1940: Gc37). This branches off in Saint-Avold and runs via Carling and Creutzwald to the German border at Überherrn . The road took over the number of the downgraded National Road 33 in 1973 . In 2006, the section between motorway junction 39 of Autoroute A4 and Saint-Avold was downgraded to Départementsstraße 633. It was expanded into a local expressway by 2009 , which is continued in Germany as Bundesstraße 269n . This created a new way for vehicles to cross the state border.

N 3 B

The Route nationale 3 B , N 3 B or RN 3 B for short, was a branch of the N 3 in Châlons-en-Champagne , which arose from it when the N 3 was relocated to a southern bypass . It ran from an intersection with the national  roads 44 and  77 over the avenue de Sainte-Menehould east to the place to the intersection with the N 3. 1974 it became a municipal road.

N 3 bis

The route nationale 3 Bis , or N 3 Bis or RN 3 Bis for short, was a partially constructed access road that was intended to be an alternative to the N 3. It was to branch off from the N 3 west of Claye-Souilly , circumnavigate Courtry , Coubron and Clichy-sous-Bois to the south and join the N 3 again in Livry-Gargan . Only the section between a road junction with national road 370 south of Clichy-sous-Bois and the junction with the N 3 in Livry-Gargan was realized. Commissioning was in 1970. In 1978 the number was renumbered to National Road 403 and in 2006 it was upgraded to RNIL 403 .
