Gravelotte is a French commune with 830 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The municipality of Gravelotte is located on the border with the Meurthe-et-Moselle department , around 15 kilometers west of the city of Metz . The municipality is part of the Lorraine Regional Nature Park .

history

Gravelotte was first mentioned in 1137 as Graveium . The place gained fame through the battle of Gravelotte , which took place there on August 18, 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War . In 2014, a museum on the Franco-German War was opened in Gravelotte, about which the Saarbrücker Zeitung wrote: "Never before has the German perspective on history been so much included in a French historical museum."
