Scy-Chazelles is a French commune with 2,676 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Metz .

geography

The municipality of Scy-Chazelles is located on the left bank of the Moselle , five kilometers west of Metz .

history

Scy-Chazelles was formed in 1809 from the place Scy and the slightly lower lying Chazelles.

From 1871 to 1918 the place belonged to the German Reich , it was called Sigach from 1915 to 1918 and during the German occupation in World War II .

Attractions

Personalities

Robert Schuman (1886–1963), the first President of the European Parliament , lived in Scy-Chazelles and is buried there. The French state has awarded his former home with the European Heritage Label .

The architect Paul Tornow (1848–1921) is also buried in the city.

Pierre-Dominique Bazaine (1786–1838), was a French military engineer, mathematician, physicist and university professor and was born here in the municipality.
