The Bismarck Tower in Metz is a lookout tower that was built in honor of Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1901/1902. It is located in Lorraine in north-eastern France. It is one of the approximately 240 Bismarck towers that were built during this time.
history
After Bismarck's death in 1898 there was a broad movement in the German Empire that erected monuments for the former Chancellor. In Metz, at that time part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine , a group of Bismarck supporters suggested in the winter of 1898 that a Bismarck tower be built in the city. In the same year it was decided to have the model Götterdämmerung by the architect Wilhelm Kreis erected on a hill on St. Quentin Mountain in Le Ban-Saint-Martin , west of the city center . The total cost of building the tower was 15,000 marks, which were raised through fundraising and lectures for the benefit of the Bismarckian column. The masonry work was carried out by the company Haase and Schott from Metz. The Royal Building Councilor Herzfeld from Metz acted as site manager .
architecture
The tower has a height of 13.5 meters. He is standing on a terrace. The tower base has a total height of 1.50 m. This originally featured a relief of the Chancellor with oak leaves.
