geography

The commune of Le Ban-Saint-Martin borders the city of Metz to the north and east . In the south, the municipality extends to the Moselle .

history

The place goes back to a Benedictine monastery from the 7th century, which was dedicated to Saint Martin . In 870 it became the court of the Duchy of Lorraine and was occupied and annexed by France together with Metz in 1552.

Through the Peace of Frankfurt the city came to Germany in 1871, the population rose rapidly from 385 (1871) to 2500 inhabitants (1900), the majority of whom were Germans. The German military administration had a large barracks complex built here with the '67 barracks , which now houses student and social housing. From 1914 to 1918 the city had the German name Sankt Martinsbann , it fell back to France in November 1918.

During the Second World War , a large part of the French population was expelled by the German civil administration and the city was incorporated into Metz under the name Martinsbann . This was reversed after the liberation at the end of 1944.
