"The Gardecops during the storming of St. Privat la Montagne in the battle of Gravelotte." Original drawing by Christian Sell from the "Gazebo"

In the Franco-Prussian War on August 18, 1870, the last battle for the encirclement of Metz took place near the town . At around 4 p.m., the Prussian artillery began to fire on the town from the outskirts of Sainte-Marie-aux-Chênes . The walls around gardens and quickly dug trenches gave the French soldiers cover and protection from the artillery fire. In the subsequent infantry attack, around 14,000 Prussians lost their lives. The new French Chassepot rifle , which had about 400 feet more range, cost the attacking Prussian Guard Division a very high blood toll. The attack stalled. Only when the Saxon troops from Roubaix intervened in the event towards evening could St. Privat be taken. The battle for the town of St. Privat was part of the battle of Gravelotte , a neighboring community. Therefore, in the Phaleristics of the double battle Gravelotte / St. Speaking privately.

Alphonse de Neuville : The Saint-Privat cemetery. 1881, the cemetery became a battlefield - the French troops, recognizable by their red trousers, are on their last legs against the Prussian army. With the picture the painter shows the republican patriotism and strengthens the French desire for revenge.
