Christian Sell (born August 14, 1831 in Altona , † April 21, 1883 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Sell ​​was first taught by his father to paint and lived in Düsseldorf from 1851, where he attended the academy until 1856 and joined Theodor Hildebrandt and Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow . He went on study trips through Germany and Belgium and initially painted historical war scenes from the Thirty Years' War such as the defense of a city wall (1852), soldiers carrying their wounded leader , calm after a repulsed storm (1856), the siege of Breisach (1861) and Imperial soldiers invaded by Sweden .

In 1864 and 1866 Sell accompanied the Prussian troops on their successful campaigns to Denmark ( German-Danish War ) and Bohemia ( German War ). In 1870/71 he also went to the Franco-German War . Participation in these military conflicts gave his work a different direction. From then on he portrayed larger battles and smaller episodes from these three wars, which are outstanding due to the liveliness of the description and the delicacy of the execution.
