Vigy is a French commune with 1716 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Metz .
geography
The place is about 18 kilometers northeast of Metz at an altitude between 213 and 324 m above sea level, the mean height is 300 m. The municipality covers 17.07 km².
history
The place was first mentioned in Merovingian times as Vigiacum and was awarded to France in 1648 at the Peace of Westphalia . Between 1365 and 1648 Vigy belonged to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .
In the war years from 1915 to 1918 and from 1940 to 1944 the place was called “Wigingen” in Germany. Until 2015, Vigy was the capital of the canton of Vigy, which was dissolved that year .

Attractions
- One of the attractions of Vigy is the Notre-Dame-de-Rabas chapel . According to legend, it was created on the orders of Charlemagne and in 1049 by Pope Leo IX. inaugurated. The chapel is now under the administration of the Metz monastery. Services are still taking place in the chapel.
