Châtel-Saint-Germain is a French commune with 1,873 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The municipality of Châtel-Saint-Germain is located about eight kilometers west of the city center of Metz in the valley of the Ruisseau de Montvaux , a small tributary of the Moselle . The Châtel-Saint-Germain stop was on the Conflans-Jarny-Metz railway line .

history

The place already existed in pre-Roman times, it was first mentioned in the 11th century as Castellum , which referred to a fortification on Mont Saint Germain. A church of St. Germain and an associated Benedictine monastery is documented for 1140, but this was abolished in 1760. Châtel-Saint-Germain has been part of France since 1661.

The place bore the Germanized name Sankt German from 1915 to 1918 , Germannsburg from 1940 to 1943 and Germansburg from 1943 to 1944 .
