Moulins-lès-Metz (German mills near Metz ) is a French commune with 5055 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It is the capital of the 2015 newly created canton Les Coteaux de Moselle .
geography
The municipality of Moulins-lès-Metz is located a few kilometers west of Metz . The old town center is to the left of the Moselle , newer residential and industrial operations on the right side of the Moselle, which together with other surrounding communities and the city of Metz form a closed settlement area. The municipal area of Moulins is bounded southeast by the Jean Dagnaux Air Force Base in Metz-Frescaty ( Base aérienne 128 Metz-Frescaty ).
history
The place was first mentioned in 936 as Molendinum and is located on the old Roman road from Verdun to Metz, where it crosses the Moselle shortly before Metz. As the property of the bishops of Metz , the city guarded the Moselle bridge until the river changed course in 1617. In 1513 the city was called Mollin devant Metz , and in 1552 it came to France.
From 1871 to 1918 it belonged again to the German Empire as a result of the Franco-German War .
1915–1918 and 1940–1944 it bore the German name Mühlen bei Metz .
