geography

The municipality of Semécourt is eight kilometers north of Metz in the Moselle valley .

history

The place was named after a Franconian named Sicmar and has always been on the French side of the historical German-French language border .

In 1871 he came to the German Empire through the Peace of Frankfurt . After the outbreak of World War I , German became the only official language from July 1, 1915 (at that time, 51% of all children at Semécourt spoke only French). On September 2, 1915, an imperial decree ordered that all French-speaking communities in the realm of Alsace-Lorraine should be given German-sounding names. On October 7, 1915, Semécourt was renamed Sigmarshofen . In November 1918 the place was returned to France.

During the Second World War , Semécourt was again occupied by the Germans, this time a large part of the French-speaking inhabitants were expelled . In November 1944 the place, badly damaged, was liberated again.
