geography
Hotonnes is located at 740 m , about 27 kilometers north of the city of Belley and 43 kilometers east-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the southeast of Bugey , in a promising location on a leveled area on the eastern slope of the Séran , in the Valromey valley , at the foot of the ridge that stretches north from the Grand Colombier to the Crêt du Nu . The Valromey forms a wide depression between two high Jura ridges oriented in a north-south direction .
In addition to the actual village, Hotonnes also included various hamlets and farms, namely:
- La Rivoire ( 760 m ) on the eastern slope of the Séran
- Les Plans-d'Hotonnes ( 1050 m ) in a hollow on the high plateau of the Retord
Neighboring towns of Hotonnes are Billiat in the north, Injoux-Génissiat in the east, Songieu in the south and Ruffieu and Le Grand-Abergement in the west.
history
Since the 13th century Hotonnes formed a parish that was dependent on Ceyzérieu . In the 14th century, the village belonged as a fief to the lords of Lhuyrieu (near Béon ), who were under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Hotonnes came to France in 1601.
Attractions
The parish church of Saint-Roman was built in the 16th century in the Gothic style. There is a small country chapel in La Rivoire.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Hotonnes was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including a sawmill. In the meantime, thanks to its beautiful location, the village has also turned into a place to live. Many of the employed people are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area.
The plateau at Les Plans-d'Hotonnes has developed into a popular winter sports area in recent decades. Thanks to the large extent of the plateau, it is primarily geared towards Nordic skiing , but there are also a few short downhill slopes that are accessed by several ski lifts.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Ruffieu over the Col de Richemond to Injoux in the Rhone Valley. Further road connections exist with Songieu and Le Grand-Abergement.
In Hotonnes there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
