Le Petit-Abergement is a former French community with 131 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belonged to the canton of Hauteville-Lompnes and the Arrondissement of Nantua .

With effect from January 1, 2016, Le Petit-Abergement was merged with Hotonnes , Le Grand-Abergement and Songieu to form Commune nouvelle Haut Valromey .

geography

Le Petit-Abergement is located at 750  m , about 15 kilometers southwest of the town of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and 39 kilometers east-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The farming village extends to the east of Bugey , in the upper Valromey valley , in a hollow on the western slope of the Séran , at the foot of the Forêt des Amortais ridge.

In addition to the hamlet of Jalinard ( 910  m ), Le Petit-Abergement included numerous farm groups and individual farms on the Jura high plateau. Neighboring towns of Le Petit-Abergement are Le Grand-Abergement in the north and east, Ruffieu in the south and Champdor and Brénod in the west.

history

Le Petit-Abergement is first mentioned in a document in 1345 under the Latinized name Parvum Albergamentum . Ecclesiastically the place belonged to the parish of Le Grand-Abergement. In the Middle Ages the village was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Le Petit-Abergement came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Étienne was built in the second half of the 14th century in the Gothic Flamboyant style, and the nave was enlarged in the 17th century.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century, the population has remained at an almost constant level since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Le Petit-Abergement was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents mainly live from their work in the first sector. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The Col de Belleroche in the wider area

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Artemare to Brénod. The neighboring village of Le Grand-Abergement, on the other side of the Séran, can be reached via a road running across the valley. Further road connections exist over the Col de Belleroche with Les Neyrolles and over the Col de Cuvillat with Champdor, both have pass heights of around 1050 m and are not accessible all year round.
