Brénod is a commune with 509 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Hauteville-Lompnes and the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Brénod is located at 853  m , nine kilometers north of Hauteville-Lompnes and about 23 kilometers northeast of the city of Ambérieu-en-Bugey (beeline). The village extends in central Bugey , on the northern edge of a wide valley of the High Jura , which is part of the Plateau d'Hauteville, on the Albarine .

The area of the 23.79 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The main part is occupied by a broad basin oriented in north-south direction (on average at 830  m ), which forms a syncline in the Jura folds . This basin is drained to the south by the Albarine. In the west this depression is bounded by the anticline of the Grande Montagne (up to 1091  m ). North of Brénod, the valley narrows noticeably and ends in the valley basin of the Combe de Férirand , in which the Étang de Marron is also located.

To the east, the Brénod depression is flanked by the northern extension of the Planachate anticline. At 1120  m, it forms the highest point in Brénod. However , a large part of the vault was removed by erosion , so that an anticline valley was created here with the Combe de Léchaud . It represents the headwaters of the Albarine, has various bog areas and is bordered in the west by the ridges of the Forêt de Pré-Goyet ( 1045  m ), in the east by the Forêt des Moussières (up to 1,100  m ).

history

The area around Brénod was cleared and made arable in the Middle Ages by the monks of the later Carthusian monastery of Meyriat. From the 12th century ecclesiastical sovereignty was incumbent on the monastery of Nantua, while secular rule was exercised first by the Thoire-Villars and from 1424 by the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Brénod came to France in 1601.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (836 people were still counted in 1896), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1990s. The local residents of Brénod are called Brénodien (ne) s or Bergnoland (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Brénod was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

In winter, Brénod benefits from tourism when cross- country skiing trails are groomed on the Plateau d'Hauteville and on the surrounding heights . In summer, the landscape around Brénod is a popular recreational area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Martin-du-Frêne to Hauteville-Lompnes . Other road connections exist with Ruffieu in Valromey, Corcelles and Les Neyrolles. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 15 kilometers away.

In Brénod there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
