Serrières-sur-Ain is a French municipality with 134 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is assigned to the canton of Pont-d'Ain and the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Serrières is located at 317  m in the southern French Jura Mountains , about 18 kilometers east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse and 54 kilometers west of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The area of the 8.18 km² municipal area covers an approximately 8 km long, narrow section of the left bank of the Ain. On the side facing away from the bank, the Montagne de Berthiand rises , a ridge ( anticline ) in the Bugey , from which small side valleys open again and again towards the river.

In addition to the main town, the following hamlets and farms belong to the municipality of Serrières-sur-Ain:

  • Sonthonnax-le-Vignoble ( 450  m ) north of Serrières in a saddle hollow 200 m above the Ain
  • Merpuis ( 310  m ) in the south
  • Malaval ( 460  m ) a group of farms on a ledge between two valley cuts.

Neighboring municipalities of Serrières-sur-Ain are Bolozon in the north, Leyssard in the east, Challes-la-Montagne and Poncin in the south and Hautecourt-Romanèche in the west.

history

Archaeological finds in two different caves in the rocks above the Ain show that the area was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age. Serrières is mentioned for the first time in 1198. From the 13th century until 1402 it belonged to the rule of the Thoire-Villars, after which it came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Serrières came to France in 1601. The village and the hamlets mentioned above achieved the status of an independent municipality through the separation from Leyssard in 1828.

Attractions

The side valleys leading down to the Ain are so steep in places that waterfalls arise there at times of high rainfall. In the Serrières area, the Ain forms an approximately 4 km long reservoir, from which electricity is obtained in the Barrage d'Allement . Due to the flooding of the valley in 1959, the bridge structure of the D979 had to be replaced, so that today a concrete arch bridge with a span of 125 m spans the dammed river at a height of 45 m.

The village church of Serrières-sur-Ain

The village church of Serrières was completed in 1897 as a replacement for a dilapidated previous chapel.

With 134 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Serrières-sur-Ain is one of the small communities in the Ain department. After the population had steadily decreased during the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 269 people counted), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Serrières-sur-Ain was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In the meantime Serrières has become a residential community, almost all employed people are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area. A significant proportion of the houses in the village are second homes or are vacant.

The department road D979 runs as a direct connection road between Nantua and Bourg-en-Bresse across the Jura mountain ranges and connects the community to the regional road network. At Serrières it crosses the Ain and then climbs steeply in the municipality to the Col de Berthiand pass. A road running along the Ain connects the hamlet of Merpuis with Serrières and the neighboring municipality of Poncin. The closest connection to the regional motorway network is the “La Croix Châlon” junction on the A404, 15 kilometers away .
