geography

Groissiat is located at 550  m , about six kilometers southwest of the city of Oyonnax and 30 kilometers east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north of Bugey , slightly elevated on the western edge of the wide valley of the Ange in the Jura , at the western foot of the Grande Côte .

The area of the 6.32 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The central part is taken up by the valley of the Ange , which has a width of about 1.5 km and forms a syncline in the Folded Jura . The valley basin is drained towards the south to the Oignin . To the west, the municipality reaches the ridge of the ridge (up to 810  m ), which separates the Ange and Oignin valleys and is densely forested ( Bois de Ban ). The Châtelard ridge rises north of the Ijean basin . To the east of the valley basin, the municipal area extends in a narrow strip over a densely wooded slope ( Forêt de Nerciat ) to the anticline of Mont Jora . The highest point in Groissiat is reached on the Haut Crêt at 950  m .

In addition to the actual village, Groissiat also includes several hamlets and farms, including:

  • Alex ( 530  m ) on the eastern edge of the Ange valley basin
  • Ijean ( 600  m ) in a hollow between Bois de Ban and Forêt de Châtelard

Neighboring municipalities of Groissiat are Géovreisset and Bellignat in the north, Apremont in the east, Martignat in the south and Izernore in the west.

history

Groissiat is first mentioned in a document in 1084 under the name Grossiacum . Over time, the spelling changed from Groisya , Gruisia (1394) and Groyssiacus (1483) to Groissiaz (1593). The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman surname Grossius and means something like Grossius' estate . The origin of Groissiat is believed to be the foundation of a priory by the monks of Saint-Claude. In the 14th century the village came under the rule of Martignat and from then on shared their fate. With the Treaty of Lyon , Groissiat came to France in 1601. In the second half of the 19th century, Groissiat, together with the other communities in the Oyonnax valley, experienced an economic boom through the introduction of industry (silk industry and comb manufacture).

Attractions

The Romanesque parish church of Notre-Dame de Pitié was built in the 11th century and was last extensively restored in 1960. Other attractions include the Couvent Croix de Jésus and the Nerciat Mill.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Groissiat was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In the first half of the 20th century, thanks to its proximity to Oyonnax, various businesses were also set up in Groissiat. Today there is a large commercial and industrial zone in the valley east of Groissiat. The important branches of industry include plastics production and the precision engineering industry. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Martignat to Géovreisset. Other road connections exist with Oyonnax and Izernore. The nearest connection to the A404 motorway (Saint-Martin-du-Frêne - Oyonnax), which crosses the municipality, is around three kilometers away.

In Groissiat there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
