geography
Chevillard is located at 815 m , about 24 kilometers northeast of the city of Ambérieu-en-Bugey and 29 km east-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The farming village extends in central Bugey , in a cleared island on the western slope of the Forêt d'Orcet in the Jura , east of the Oignin valley .
The area of the 6.67 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau sloping towards the west. It drops steeply on three sides, to the south to the Vallée de Meyriat , to the west to the valley of the Oignin and to the north to the deeply eroded valley of the Combe de Vau . The municipal boundary runs above the steep edge and only extends down into the Meyriat basin in the very south. The slope rises to the east and finally culminates in the Forêt d'Orcet , where the highest elevation of Chevillard is reached at 1102 m .
The hamlet of L'Orme ( 720 m ) on the edge of the plateau and some individual farms belong to Chevillard . Chevillard's neighboring municipalities are Saint-Martin-du-Frêne in the north, Brénod in the east, Vieu-d'Izenave and Condamine in the south and Maillat in the west.
history
The village was first mentioned in the 10th century and belonged to the Nantua monastery . In the Middle Ages, Chevillard was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon it came to France in 1601.
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Théodule, originally built in Gothic style, was largely rebuilt in the 17th century.

Until well into the 20th century, Chevillard was a village dominated by agriculture , in particular dairy and cattle breeding, and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. There are few jobs outside of the primary sector. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Saint-Martin-du-Frêne. Other road connections exist with Brénod and Maillat. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around seven kilometers away.
