Col de Richemond

The area of the 18.10 km 2 municipality covers a section of the Rhône valley. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the plateau of Chanay, which lies at an average of 480  m . It descends gradually towards the east and is subdivided by the valleys of short side streams of the Rhône. The eastern border runs along the Rhône, which flows here from north to south in a valley sunk deep into the surroundings and in sections flanked by rock walls. In the south the border is marked by the erosion valley of the Dorche . To the west, the community area extends over the steep slope to the adjoining Jura ridge in the area of the Col de Richemond pass crossing ( 1036  m ). On the Crêt Dauphin , the highest point of Chanay is reached at 1200  m .

In addition to the actual village, Chanay also includes various hamlets and farms, including:

  • Dorches ( 370  m ) in the valley of the Dorche
  • Contamine ( 440  m ) on the Chanay plateau
  • Vovray ( 540  m ) on the Chanay plateau at the foot of the Jura

history

Chanay is first mentioned in a document in the 10th century and at that time belonged to the property of the Nantua monastery . The names Chagnay (1365) and Chaney (1400) have survived from a later period . The place name goes back to the old French word chasnoi (oak grove). In the 12th century, Chanay was part of the Dorches rule. In the 14th century, the place was the center of the Chanay-d'Izernore rule.

Former Rhône bridge near Pyrimont

Asphalt mines used to be exploited in the Rhone Valley near Pyrimont . Ruins of the asphalt factories still stand today, and the Pyrimont-Chanay station on the Lyon-Genève railway line , which was built for loading, is no longer served. The Château de Pyrimont , built above the mines in 1835 , belonged to the owners of the asphalt mines. The pont de Pyrimont road bridge, completed in 1907, crossed the Rhône at the level of the station . The bridge was blown up in 1940 during the Second World War by French soldiers before the advancing Germans and was never rebuilt.

Attractions

The parish church of Chanay was built in the 15th century and remodeled in the 19th century; it served as the burial place of the Lords of Dorches. The Château de Chanay originally dates back to the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 19th century. Ruins of the medieval castle Dorches (12th century) have been preserved, especially a square tower is inscribed as monument historique . The hamlet of Dorches is characterized by several farmhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries. At Pyrimont, the pillars of the bridge that was blown up in 1940 protrude from the dammed Rhône.

Economy and Infrastructure

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D991 departmental road from Châtillon-en-Michaille to Seyssel . Another road connection exists with Challonges east of the Rhône via a new Rhône bridge near Surjoux. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 18 kilometers away.

In Chanay there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
