Surjoux is a former French municipality with 81 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belonged to the canton of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine in the Arrondissement of Nantua and was a member of the community association Pays Bellegardien .

geography

Surjoux is located at 380  m , about ten kilometers south of the town of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and 49 kilometers east-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Rhone Valley around 100 m above the valley floor in a short side valley, at the eastern foot of the Crêt du Nu , a ridge of the French Jura .

The area of the 4.31 km² large Commune déléguée covers a section of the Rhône valley. The eastern border runs along the Rhône, which flows from north to south in a narrow valley cut deep into the surrounding plateaus. From the course of the river the community area extends westward over a steep slope, which is partially traversed by ledges, to the adjacent high plateau at the foot of the Jura. This is subdivided by the valleys of short side streams of the Rhône. Above the village, the highest elevation of Surjoux is reached at 500  m .

The hamlet of Bognes ( 400  m ) on the plateau and some farms belong to Surjoux . Neighboring communities of Surjoux were Injoux-Génissiat in the north, Franclens and Challonges in the east, Chanay in the south and Lhôpital in the west. With the latter, Surjoux was merged with effect from January 1, 2019 to form Commune nouvelle Surjoux-Lhopital .

history

Surjoux is first mentioned in the 13th century under the name Chargiou . The village was the center of a small lordship in the 14th century.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Surjoux was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, the residents mainly live from their work in the first sector. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and mainly in Bellegarde-sur-Valserine.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Road connections exist with Injoux-Génissiat, Chanay and Challonges. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 16 kilometers away.
