Lhôpital a former's French community and today's commune Déléguée with 50 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine in the Arrondissement of Nantua and is a member of the Pays Bellegardien municipal association .

geography

Lhôpital is located at 470  m , about ten kilometers south-southwest of the city of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and 47 km east-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The farming village extends in the Bellegarde basin, in a promising location on the southern edge of the Michaille plateau, in the hollow of a short side valley of the Rhone , at the eastern foot of the Crêt du Nu , a ridge of the French Jura .

The area of ​​the 3.68 km² municipal area covers a section of the Rhône valley. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the Michaille plateau, which is here at an average of 460  m . It descends gradually towards the east and is subdivided by the valleys of short side streams of the Rhône, but the municipality does not reach down into the Rhône valley. To the west, the community area extends in an extremely narrow strip over the steep Jura slope to the high plateau, which connects to the Crêt du Nu to the south. At 1150  m , the highest point in Lhôpital is reached here.

Neighboring communities of Lhôpital were Injoux-Génissiat in the north, Surjoux in the east, Chanay in the south and Haut-Valromey with Songieu in the west. Lhôpital was merged with Surjoux on January 1, 2019 to form Commune nouvelle Surjoux-Lhopital .

history

Lhôpital was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. At that time it belonged to the Counts of Geneva . The place owes its name to a hospital of the Order of St. John. By agglutination of the French article writing today originated from L'Hôpital Lhôpital .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was rebuilt in the 19th century, whereby the Romanesque apse of the previous building was retained and integrated.

With 50 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Lhôpital is one of the smallest communities in the Ain department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century, the population has increased again since the mid-1980s. The local residents of Lhôpital are called Hospitaliers or Hospitalières in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Lhôpital was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, the residents mainly live from their work in the first sector. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on the D991 department road, which leads from Seyssel to Châtillon-en-Michaille . Further road connections exist with Surjoux and Challonges. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 16 kilometers away.
